No tyrant can count on mere threats of lost life
As ways to suppress freedom’s longing;
Vultures will circle until their prey drops
Assured they cannot rise again.
Love does not obey purely rational laws—
Never play down the urge to be free.
Yet despots repeat their mistake year by year,
Lose sight of the spark of the rebel
Inside every heart from the great to the meek—
Vassalry won’t be endured.
Enough with the chains, stand and throw off your yoke
Shout “Nothing but full liberty!”
